My router has obtained an IP address but I have no working Internet connection. What can I do?

Has the router obtained an IP address, but you do not have a working Internet connection? In that case, there are some other factors that may be playing a role. These causes are generally related to the settings on your computer:

-    Anti-virus security software
-    Firewall settings
-    A fixed IP configuration of the wireless network adapter in your computer.

In all these cases, you cannot log into your router’s Settings menu (Graphical User Interface), because the computer will not obtain the IP address from the router that it needs to be able to access the network.

What can you do?

a) Temporarily disable the security software.
b)
Temporarily disable the firewall.
c)
Check the settings for your wireless network adapter.

a) Temporarily disable the security software

Use the “Help” function of your security software to find out how it can be temporarily disabled. If you have any questions about disabling the security software, we advise you to contact its manufacturer.

In some cases, virus scanners may block local network traffic. Temporarily disable the protection and try to log into the router’s Settings menu (Graphical User Interface) again. If that works, the problem is located in the security software. Contact the manufacturer of the security software.

b) Temporarily disable the firewall

Use the “Help” function of your firewall to find out how it can be temporarily disabled. If you have any questions about disabling the firewall, we advise you to contact its manufacturer.

In some cases, firewalls may block local network traffic. Temporarily disable the protection and try to log into the router’s Settings menu (Graphical User Interface) again. If that works, the problem is located in the firewall. Contact the firewall manufacturer.
